What is Dry Eye Syndrome and what causes it?

Dry Eye Syndrome causes a decrease in the amount of tears that are naturally produced by your eye. There is often inflammation of the glands that produce tears. The front surface of your eye is normally kept moist by this thin layer of tears, so when only a small amount is produced, it will result in dry areas. If symptoms persist and aren't treated, it could cause a gradual loss of vision.

The disease can be caused by several factors - perhaps the most common is the body's aging. As we get older, the body naturally produces fewer tears. Dry Eye Syndrome can also be caused by hormonal changes, thyroid disorders or rheumatoid arthritis. Finally, certain medications including anti-depressants, birth control pills and antihistamines can play a role in the development of this condition.

What are my treatment options?

Although the condition cannot be cured, there are several ways of treating it. One of our surgeons will use state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment to look for dry spots on the surface of your cornea, signs of inflammation, and will examine the position and function of your eyelids.

The first (and easiest) way to treat dry eyes is through lubricating drops and a nighttime ointment, which can be prescribed based on your individual needs. If these prove ineffective, silicone or collagen plugs can be inserted to close the tear ducts. This is a simple procedure that can be done during an office visit in which a tiny "seed-like" plug will be inserted into your tear duct. This is an easy and effective procedure that can be done within a few minutes. In addition, prescription eye drops may be used to alleviate the inflammation of the tear-producing glands in the eye. Nutritional supplements may also be of benefit.

We'll work with you to create a comprehensive treatment plan to meet your needs.

Testimonials

I really thought it was important to see my surgeon, Dr. Cottle, from the beginning of the process to the end. She evaluated me preoperatively, did the surgery, and saw me for my post-operative visits. Not all centers provide such one-on-one service. I love my new eyes!
