What is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® has been used therapeutically for over 17 years to treat a variety of medical conditions.  It is approved in more than 75 countries and remains one of the most widely researched medicines in the world.  The same formulation with dosing specific to moderate to severe frown lines was approved in 2002 as BOTOX® Cosmetic.

What is BOTOX® Cosmetic used for?

A purified protein, BOTOX® Cosmetic is administered in a simple, nonsurgical procedure that temporarily improves the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people ages 18 to 65.  Because frown lines are dynamic lines caused by overactive muscles beneath the skin, they can usually be treated by administering very low doses of BOTOX® Cosmetic directly into the muscles via a few tiny injections.  Static lines, on the other hand, are lines that are visible even when the msucles are at rest.  These lines are usually treated by injecting a filler. 

Does it work for men?

While results will naturally vary from person to person, BOTOX® Cosmetic is shown to be effective in men.

Will it make my skin color uneven?

BOTOX® Cosmetic works only on the underlying muscles so it can be administered to adults with varying skin types and colors.

How will BOTOX® Cosmetic affect my facial expressions?

Only small amounts of the product are injected into the muscles that cause frown lines between your brows to form.  When administered by an experienced physician, you should not lose the ability to laugh, smile, or otherwise show expression.

Is the procedure painful?

No anesthesia is required and most patients experience only minimal and brief discomfort.  Your doctor may chosse to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream prior to injecting.

What are the common side effects?

The most common side effects following injection include temporary eyelid droop and nausea.

When will I start to see results?

You should start to see visible improvement in the area between your brows within a few days.  The area may continue to improve for up to a week.

How long will the results last?

When administered properly, the effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment can last up to 4 months.
